Rise

David Nash

Before COVID happened, I was writing a lot. I was thinking of the rebirth the spring would bring us. I was hoping for a rising sun. A new day. A political change. I was hopeful. It was a time of new ideas and new songs. Then I hit a wall. Work stopped. Writing stopped. I spent a lot of time with my children.

Like many others, I wanted to find a way to support the community of artists around me. I bought albums, donated where I could, supported folks on patreon, etc. I decided I had enough songs to put together an EP. I contacted a local artist, Landon Sheely, to create a cover. I reached out to my friends at Carpet Booth Studios in Rochester and asked if they would help mix and master the tracks I recorded in my basement. And just like that, the album rose up.

In late April, I started writing again and found a few new songs to add to the mix. I decided to leave these track un-mastered and release them as the b-side to the project.

I was preparing to release and then George Floyd was murdered. Since then, wow... There is just so much to say and so much to learn. So much to listen to.

The song "Quicksand" took on new meaning for me ("What will I do with this voice I've been given? What will I do with this life I've been living?") and when I saw Bandcamp would be donating their proceeds to the NAACP on Juneteenth (6/19 - Freedom Day), I thought it would be a good day to release this album.

Thank you for listening to music. Thank you for listening to those around us who are asking for equality and help.

Here are just a few resources/organizations to consider learning more about if you have the time:
